1 May to 31 August
We spent the first part of the year awakening the city, as much to itself as to the wider world.
In Part Two, we played. With new ways of seeing our city; new ways of being with each other; new ways of creating stories.
We found wonder in every part of the city.
Our playful Part Two projects.
Who better to shine a light on the amazing communities of Leeds and tell their stories than the people themselves? My LEEDS 2023 sees people across Leeds come together in a city-wide celebration taking place in every ward.
What happens when you raise a barn, then fill it to the rafters with hopes for the future?
Following a spectacular 24 hour build by 300 women, girls and non-binary people, The WOW Barn was a place to enjoy activities, gatherings and inspired by this dream of an equitable world; a world in which all women, girls and non-binary people have the space, time, support and permission to live their dreams.
Inspired by the ancient forests of Leeds.
This new public artwork in City Square reawakens history and captures the magic of the Forest of Leodis. Inspired by Leeds' roots as an ancient woodland, world-famous visual artist Michael Pinsky and award-winning environmental architects Studio Bark put sustainability at the heart of this epic piece for LEEDS 2023.
Children’s Day: Reimagined, a free, family-friendly event in Roundhay Park, celebrating the children of Leeds.
Inspired by the Children’s Day event of the past and boldly reimagined for the future, our event was co-created by Fevered Sleep, the Young Creatives (11 young people aged 8-14 from across the city) and over 1000 Leeds school children.
Celebrate the Leeds-born trailblazer of civil engineering in a series of events and activities across the city.
Get playful with engineering at museum events, STEAM activities in schools and interactive workshops in libraries. Hear talks and debates from bright minds in art, culture and science to get us all thinking big about our future.
Heritage is within us all.
It’s in the stories we tell, the food we make, and the songs we sing. It’s what makes our city so special. Hidden Stories is our year-long co-created programme of special projects with creativity at their core, celebrating the heritage we all share.
