OUR BID TO BECOME EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

Work with us: Designer

“You are not awarded the honour for what you are but rather by convincing the panel of what you will become. The distance between where you are and where you want to be – that’s what wins it.”

Alan Lane, Director of Slung Low
In conversation as part for the 2014 #Leeds2023 consultation

  1. Brief

We are looking for a professional designer with experience in art direction to design a compelling print document for the Leeds 2023 Bid for European Capital of Culture which will also be published online.

Drawing on existing Leeds 2023 brand guidelines, you will design the 80-page bid document to the guidelines set out by the European Commission and manage both photography commissions and the subsequent print production

The final bid document will be easy to read and uncluttered with a focus on legibility and avoiding designs that could serve to distract from our brilliant plans, being cognisant that it primarily needs to convince the panel of 12 European judges

The Leeds 2023 team will submit a first-stage bid by 27th October 2017. We are flexible to negotiate your start date and work pattern, however, you must available to start work with us no later than 22nd June 2017 and to be available to work on the majority of the bid design throughout August, September and the first half of October.

  1. Background

The European Capital of Culture competition is an international competition designed by the European Union to promote European citizenship and increase our understanding of world issues through culture and the arts.

Each year two or three European countries host the title. In 2023, a UK city and a Hungarian city will become hosts. On 27th October 2017, several UK cities are expected to submit written bids to a panel of European judges, competing against each other to win the title of European Capital of Culture 2023.

Only by submitting a strong and compelling bid can Leeds make it onto the shortlist.

Leeds is working with the surrounding region and partners from across the North, Europe and the world, to develop an artistic programme for the bid that is reflective of Leeds and the many cultures calling the city their home. In addition to a year-long cultural celebration our bid seeks to be truly transformational for the city.

“It’s our intention to ensure that this is a bid that belongs to the people of Leeds and which properly communicates how vibrant and diverse our different communities and cultural institutions are.”

Sharon Watson, Chair, Leeds 2023 Steering Group
