People from Leeds and beyond have given a major boost to Leeds’ 2023 European Capital of Culture bid after helping organisers reach a major milestone.

The #MakeLeeds2023 campaign – which was launched to mark the 100-day countdown to the city’s bid submission – has already gone beyond its 2,023 online pledge target.

The number, which had been set to actively spread the word about the city’s bid, has been reached as Leeds enters the 50-day countdown of its submission being made to the judges.

And to mark the milestone, Leeds’ bid team has unveiled a specially commissioned film – ‘I am a Spark’ – to promote its bid further to residents, businesses and communities across the city and beyond. The video features actor, David-O, delivering a powerful monologue highlighting the culture and can-do attitude of Leeds. It showcases a mixture of traditional arts and culture interspersed with contemporary arts groups to promote Leeds as a 21st century city.

Sharon Watson, Chair of the Leeds 2023 Independent Steering Group said: “It is extremely pleasing to have hit our #MakeLeeds2023 pledge target faster than anticipated. This is a wonderful indication that our bid has strong backing from a diverse range of people and groups and that Leeds is really getting behind it.

“Our #MakeLeeds2023 campaign is really gathering positive momentum and has seen an exciting programme of events launched that have been designed to generate further momentum ahead of the submission of Leeds’s official bid on October 27.

“Initiatives such as the promotional film by Studio 12 highlight and showcase the wonderful diversity of Leeds as well as helping to bring people together, giving our bid a distinct and unified voice.”

Rob Pritchard, Director at Mojo Films, said: “We created a film that symbolises Leeds working together and shows a visual journey of the history and culture of the city as we head into a bright future with the possibility of holding the European Capital of Culture 2023 title.”

Jamie Hutchison, Producer at Studio 12, added “It was such a pleasure to produce a film that allowed the citizens of Leeds to come together and show the world what Leeds has to offer.”
