Transform 17

19 Apr - 22 Apr 2017
Venue - Various

Transform, is a festival of bold, local and international theatre, celebratign the diverse and experimental theatre scene in Leeds and matching it with the best that Europe and the wider world has to offer in cutting edge theatre and performance.

This bi-annual cacophony of thought provoking theatre is back in 2017 with a new programme depicting the story of the Reclaim the Night movement which was kick started in Leeds to promote women’s safety, billed alongside a raft of international performances exploring the future of Europe as it enters a period of uncertainty following the UK referendum result and a wave of re-elections across the continent in the coming years.

Coursing through theatres, arts venues and outdoor spaces, Transform 17 will explore everything from activism, community collaboration, the digital age, gender politics, and the future of life in a post-Brexit world.

Leeds 2023 is proud to support Transform’s international programme taking in work from Berlin based immersive theatre and media artists machina eX, who fast forward to Germany in 2021 as it prepares to host a referendum on whether or not follow the British and make an exit from the EU, in Lessons of Leaking.

Europe’s provocative choreographers Holzinger & Riebeek are making a hotley anticipated return to Leeds after their premiere of Schönheitsabend (A Beautiful Evening) went down a storm at Transform 16. They return with Wellness, a strictly 18+ show in which an ensemble of performers compete in a surreal training course of fitness, psychotherapy, beauty pageants, sex and yoga; striving to become their own versions of Miss and Mister Universe.

Spain’s El Conde de Torrefiel, are asking what the young generation think about Europe today? Exploring fears, anxieties, and concerns that follow us as we go about our daily lives. Guerilla, is an epic, visceral performance featuring a company of local participants. The action is made up of three distinct parts (a rave, Tai Chi class, and conference) and unfolds in a dystopian future in three different cities.

Fasten your seatbelts and settling for a whistle stop tour of Europe through a Leeds lens.
